Calculating the scrap value of your sterling silver

Here's a link to a calculator for the value of the silver content in scrap sterling pieces to be melted down:

We've found this one easy to understand and use. You'll need to weigh your sterling pieces and you'll need to look up the current spot market price for silver. Some notes about the calculator are:

  • You'll probably weigh your sterling on a "regular" scale, so select "Av Oz" for "Units".
  • For purity, select ".925".
  • Enter the current spot market price.
  • Leave the "Markup/Discount" field at zero.

When you click, "Calculate", you'll see the market value for the silver content of pieces.

Remember that you probably will not be able to sell your pieces for this amount. Middlemen and refiners will take their cuts. If you would like to see what your actual selling price might be at a 40% discount, enter "-40" in the "Markup/Discount" field and click "Calculate" again.

You can find the current silver spot market price in a graph on the right side of the screen at our blog, Silver Chatter.
