On March 21, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a Lake Charles apartment complex in regards to a report of a 2 year old boy who was found wandering around the complex alone.

Upon arrival, deputies observed the victim who was barefoot, dirty, and wearing a diaper that appeared to have not been changed for some time. The victim, who appeared to be in poor health and also had a severe rash with several open sores, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

During the investigation, deputies discovered while the victim was walking around the apartment complex by himself, family member Darnetta M. Coleman, 27, 2960 Lake Street, Apt. # 146, Lake Charles, was sleeping and was still asleep when deputies arrived at her apartment.

During further investigation, deputies discovered the 2 year old boy was living in the apartment under extremely foul living conditions, which included a sparse amount of food; carpets, furniture and walls stained and covered in dirt and with a strong odor of mildew and stagnant food.

Coleman was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with child desertion. The child was removed from the home by the Department of Children & Family Services.

Judge David Ritchie set her bond at $50,000.

CPSO Detective Cory Myers is the lead investigator on this case.
