Cal signed two more football players on Friday, slightly raising the ranking of the Golden Bears' recruiting class, according to the leading recruiting services.
Cal signed Willie Fletcher, a defensive back from Lutherna High School in range, Calif., and Maurice Bennett, a 295-pound defensive tackle from Madison, Miss.
Neither is ranked particuarly high by the chief recruiting services, although that's not always an indicator of how good they will be as college players.
Bennett reportedly has 4.98 speed in the 40-yard dash, which is pretty quick for a guy who's nearly 300 pounds.
As a result of the signings, Cal rose to No. 33 in Scout.com's national team rankings, and is at No. 23, according to Rivals.com.
It's not the top-10 recruiting class Cal thought it had before the departure of assistant coaches Tosh Lupoi and Eric Kiesau to Washington, and it's not nearly as high as rival Stanford, which put together its best recruiting class ever, but it's not the poor class that had been aniticipated after the loss of several players who had verbally committed to the Bears. Midway through Wednesday's signing day, Cal had slipped to No. 48 in the Scout.com team rankings, so things have brightened a bit.
Perhaps the most interesting of the decommitments was wide receiver Payton Jordan, a top-100 recruit, who first committed to Cal, then changed his mind after the departure of Lupoi and Kiesau, but ultimately signed with UCLA.
