Caking with Stolle's Sweets: How to keep a baked cake moist

Taking care of, and having children inevitable means that at some point you will be hosting a birthday party. Children’s birthday parties can very quickly get out of financial control.  Items that stereotypically add to the mounting cost of a party these days include but are not limited to the gift, the invites, the plates, napkins, flatware, balloons, party favors and, of course, the cake.  To help slash the cost of a birthday party, why not consider baking and decorating the cake yourself?  This does not have to me a monumental task.  Boxed cakes have come a long way since your mother spent hours baking cakes from scratch.  By using a few simple techniques discussed in Caking with Stolle's Sweets: How to customize a boxed cake and this new trick, you too can bake moist, delicious cakes that no one would ever suspect came out of a box.

After removing your cake from the oven and applying a cake wash, as discussed in Caking with Stolle's Sweets: How to bake a moist cake, simply moisten a wash towel or paper towel with warm water and ring it out so that it does not drip.  This application of moist heat will help the cake to retain the moisture from the humid baking process and wash, as discussed in Caking with Stolle's Sweets: How to bake a moist cake, while cooling it to room temperature.  Once the cake is covered with the moistened towel, it can be cooled at room temperature or it can be placed in the freezer or refrigerator to expedite the process.

The simple act of baking and decorating the birthday cake at home can slice an easy $30-$70 off the birthday budget without making a big sacrifice.  Next time you plan a party for your little one, consider it—you just may suprise yourself!
