The 80/35 Music Festival and the Ames Sesquicentennial celebration will both roll on through Saturday, bringing us live music from acts like Cake, The Envy Corps, Useful Jenkins, Robert Randolph and The Family Band, and Buckwheat Zydeco. Here is a look at the July 5 concert calendar for Central Iowa.
Day 2 at the 2014 80/35 Music Festival in Des Moines' Western Gateway Park brings performances by notables Dr. Dog, Useful Jenkins, The Envy Corps, Caroline Smith, Xavier Rudd, and Saturday headliner Cake. One-day passes for the main stage will be $45 at the gate, but there are two free stages for all those monetarily challenged music fans. Check out the full schedule of performers in Examiner's 80/35 preview. Also, don't forget that folk singer Caroline Smith will be leading a Des Moines Music Coalition sponsored Music University panel entitled "Being A Woman in Rock & Roll" at the Ritual Cafe (on the western end of the festival) from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. After the festival ends, don't miss the after parties. Gas Lamp, Vaudeville Mews, Wooly's, and Raccoon River Brewing Company will all be hosting 80/35 after parties. You can check out the details in Examiner's 80/35 after party preview.
The Ames Sesquicentennial celebration continues on Saturday with food vendors, live music, historical presentations, kid's events, crafts, a beer garden, a farmer's market, and more. The activities will kick off at 8 a.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. Saturday's live music will feature performances by Buckwheat Zydeco and Robert Randolph and The Family Band. The former pioneered the sound of Louisiana zydeco music, owns the three greatest-selling zydeco albums of all time, and is a Grammy nominee, while the latter was named to Rolling Stone's list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” for his work on the pedal steel guitar in the funk, rock, and rhythm and blues genres.
