Caffeine and alcohol combined drinks banned in Michigan and other states

Phusion Products; Four Loko has been reported in the news lately due to many states requiring a ban on their caffeine and alcohol combined drinks. Phusion Products co-founders Chris Hunter, Jeff Wright, and Jaison Freeman issued a statment this week that they will be reomoving caffeine, guarana and taurine from their Four Loko drinks. Although they maintain that they feel combinng caffeine and alcohol are safe.

The FTC and the FDA both have voiced health concerns on Four Loko and other similar drinks due to a significant number of young people passing out and/or being hospitialized after consuming these products. Plus they feel young adults are being targeted for these products partly due to the packaging which looks more like a juice than a typical alcohol containing drink. They stressed that each can may provide up to the equivilant of 3 cups of coffee and 3 cans of beer. Caffeine is also a diuretic that may cause diarrhea in doses larger than the body can handle, which can quickly lead to dehydration. The addition of alcohol may intensify this effect. How much a body can handle is highly individualized.

Many Ann Arbor stores carry these type of drinks, however, Michigan has since placed a ban on them and manufactureres have until the beginning of December to get rid of them.

The current cans do have the words: "Contains Alcohol" listed on their cans but it's worth it to find out the exact ingredients and how it can effect the human body, especially when consumed by young people.

If the FDA were really concerned about junk in our food they would not allow growth hormones and MSG and things of that nature in our food. If it does not profit them, then they look to ban it. How about the FDA banning stuff that is even more detrimental to our health. Things that cause our children to start maturing at an early age, how about that one FDA?

Kind of a no-brainer. Those drinks should be banned. The equivalent of 3 cups of coffee and 3 cans of beer? I don't want my kids getting into that stuff.

As an adult, and a caffeine lover - one cup at a time- I don' t think "I" would be able to handle one of those drinks. Kids maturing bodies sure don't need it!

This is a great idea. There is enough dangers out there already without pumping your body full and having no control over it.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

excellent advice, we have seen this on our Montreal TV but we don't have as much caffeine in our drinks so we don\t know if the government is going to ban them or not.
