Caffe Roma in Beverly Hills is an institution, the Gubernator remembers fondly.  During his Larry King interview on the passing of legend Merv Griffin, California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, reminisced about the fun times he and Merv had at Caffe Roma.  Also, Sylvester Stallone, Robert Duvall, and Brigitte Nielsen are regulars.  In fact, Caffe Roma is one of Prince Frederick Von Anhalt's favorite spots, so he likely took Anna Nicole Smith there, when he was courting her.  But don't count Caffe Roma out, as an establishment for the older set.  DJ Sophia Lin was recently at Caffe Roma, and celebrities like Kimora Lee Simon's beau, Djimon Hounsou, make Caffe Roma their regular scene, which is not surprising, considering the lively entertainment at Caffe Roma.

Truly, Caffe Roma markets itself as a lounge, in addition to being a restaurant, and a very fine one at that.  However, Friday through Saturday, one of the hot night spots in Beverly Hills emerges. The music at Caffe Roma is modern and upbeat, with live music most of the night.  Although there is no dance floor, per se, the atmosphere may promote the impromptu dance.

If you have a hard time finding Caffe Roma, it is because it is off a courtyard of shops on Canon Drive, right next to a hair salon and an extravagantly stocked cigar store.  Caffe Roma's known 90210 wide, for its specialty coffees, authentic espresso, and thin crust pizza.  Most regulars enjoy the comfortable atmosphere, and the laid back feeling of being at a true lounge.  Caffe Roma boasts a bar at its front with comfy chairs; a few sidewalk tables out front; and sofas for lounging on the cobblestone side patio.

Look for Caffe Roma to become a lot more popular in the coming months, when the weather warms up.  The outside patio, which seats 70, makes Caffe Roma an ideal place to begin a long night of fun and dancing, for locals, tourists, and celebrities. 

If you are just starting your night, there are several nightspots in close proximity.  A short taxi drive away, (about $6.00,) will bring you in contact with the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel, the Polo Lounge, or some of the best sushi in Los Angeles, at Bond Street in the Thompson Hotel. Or, if you are ready to dance the night away, the same taxi driver can drop you off at Nic's Martini Lounge or Aqua Lounge.

Know before you go:

If you want to try out the restaurant, with little expense, happy hour is from 3 to 8 p.m., with items priced as low as $5.  For the full experience of Caffe Roma, dinner entrées start at as little as $11, (very, very inexpensive for this high end neighborhood.)  Caffe Roma is a large restaurant, so you can usually get in with little trouble, whether day or night.  The wine list could be deemed expensive, but a bottle of Masi Valpolicella, is one of the best values.
