Cafe Cocomo closing date pushed back until at least July

UPDATE: Cafe Cocomo will not be closing until at least September.

Earlier this month it was announced that Cafe Cocomo would be closing its doors for good in June. However, Cafe Cocomo promoters have now pushed back the closing date of the venue until at least July 25th.

Cafe Cocomo is one of San Francisco's most well known salsa dancing venues, famous for hosting live music events almost every night of the week, as well as serving as the venue of choice for hosting opening parties for events such as the San Francisco Salsa Congress and San Francisco Salsa Festival.

However, last month it was announced that Cafe Cocomo had been sold to make way for much needed housing development, bringing to and end 18 years of salsa history. There was even a big announcement on the Cafe Cocomo website (which is still live, as of this writing) that Cocomo would be closing in June, and a number of promoters held events at Cocomo marketed as "closing parties" for the historic venue.

Except apparently now Cocomo won't be closing until at least July. Corey Raynor, one of the promoters for "Taste Fridays", held every Friday at Cocomo, has stated that the owners have told him that he can book bands until July 25th, which means that Cocomo will stay open at least until then. The final day of Cocomo could still change, however, as no official last day has been set.

This turn of events has left many salsa promoters looking like the boy who cried wolf, and may also complicate matters for a number of local promoters who have organized new salsa events in SF, expecting Cafe Cocomo to close. Two such events are Salsa Buena Thursdays and Tumbao Fridays, which were meant to replace Cocomo's Thursday & Friday events. The fate of these two events is now up in the air, as SF dancers must decide whether to check out the new venues or continue attending Cocomo until it closes.

Although the absolute final date that Cocomo will be open has not been announced, the venue is still expected to close sometime within the next few months, as the venue has already been sold and is due to be torn down to make way for condos.
