WILMINGTON – Caesar Rodney took an early 2-0 lead over Harriton (Pa.) High School Friday morning in the Diamond State Classic, but any hope was short-lived as the Rams stormed back and overwhelmed CR, 69-30, in a New Castle Insurance Cup bracket game at the St. E Center. Katie Melvin put on a scoring show in the first half, going for 17 points. She would finish with a game-high 21.

Harriton will meet Delaware Military Academy for the New Castle Insurance Cup bracket championship Saturday at 4 p.m. The Riders take on St. Thomas More Academy in the consolation game, which is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

Melvin hit most of her shots inside, as CR could not compete with the Rams’ quickness and height. Harriton hammered the Riders with a press throughout the first half. When Melvin hit a layup after a turnover by CR midway through the first, the Riders trailed, 15-3. It did not get any better, as the Rams led, 23-7, after one quarter and 42-14 at the half.

When they did find open shots, the Riders struggled to convert. They managed just 11 field goals in the game, none from three-point range, and four of them came in the fourth, when the outcome had long been decided.

Lexi Prillaman and Simone London each scored 11 points for Caesar Rodney, which is 2-3 on the season. For Harriton, Olivia Tevis and Sabrina Tabasso joined Melvin in double figures. Tevis had 15 points, Tabasso 11.
