September 14, 2010 - Loyola Marymount University (LMU) hosted a screening of the documentary American Masters Cachao: Uno Mas Monday night at the Mann 6 Theater at Hollywood and Highland to celebrate the arrival of its new School of Film and Television’s dean - Stephen Ujlaki.
Ujlaki has degrees from Harvard University and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographiques in Paris. He joined LMU this July after nine years as the head of the Cinema Department at San Francisco State University and as the director of the DOC Institute, which he founded. Ujlaki has been the producer of more than 30 documentaries, films and made-for-TV movies, including the screened film, which he co-produced with actor Andy Garcia and Tom Luddy.
American Masters Cachao: Uno Mas features Israel ‘Cachao’ Lopez, the musician and composer considered by many the “Cuban Mozart,” who is credited as the father of Mambo and the pioneer of the jam sessions that started what is known today as Latin Jazz.
The Cineson All Stars – with Andy Garcia on bongos, Albert Salas on piano, Carlitos del Puerto on bass, Orestes Vilato on timbal, John Santos on congas, Justo Almario on sax, Luis Eric Gonzalez on trumpet, Danilo Lozano on flute, Lazaro Galarraga, Iris Sandra Cepeda and Nelson Marquez, on vocals – performed at an after-party at Level 3. Trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval and Cuban pianist Daniel Amat joined the band as special guests.
The event was held exactly a week before American Masters Cachao: Uno Mas gets aired by PBS on KCET’s American Masters September 20, 2010 at 9 pm ET (Please check local listings.)
