North bracket top-seeded Cabrillo College Seahawks volleyball team defeated San Joaquin Delta College Mustangs 3-1 (27-29, 26-24, 25-13, 25-19) in the final round of the regionals on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at the Cabrillo College campus in Aptos, CA. The win propelled the Seahawks to the state championship tournament at Shasta College in Redding, CA on December 3-4, 2011.
The Seahawks led the first set 6-0 and then jumped to an 11-4 lead, but the upset-minded Mustangs rallied to tie the set at 13-13. It was a see-saw battle after that, and Delta College prevailed 29-27 to take the set. It was the first set that the Seahawks yielded in the regionals.
Down by a set, Cabrillo College once against started fast with a 4-0 lead in the second set. The Seahawks jumped to an 8-3 lead, and again the Mustangs climbed back to even the set at 13-13. The set was close, but this time Cabrillo College took the set 26-24 to even the match at 1-1.
Cabrillo College finally showed its power with a dominating third set and won it easily at 25-13. The fourth set was close from the get go, but the Seahawks eventually pulled away and won the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Tori Bozzo led the Seahawks offensively with 19 kills, and Summer Mitchell and Kaitlin Shaug added 12 kills and nine kills respectively. Brooke Carroll dished out 47 assists. Defensively, Ashley Pittman led Cabrillo College with 33 digs, and Mitchell had 20 digs. At the net, Sierra Clark had eight blocks, and Alex DaRosa added seven blocks while Shaug added six blocks.
Cabrillo College is scheduled to play South second-seeded El Camino College on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 2pm.
