Okay, so now you have your garden planned out. Maybe some of you have gone so far as to have already ordered your plants. So now what? Don't think you can just plant your seeds and place them in a sunny window, that will not work. What you need is a grow stand. Grow stands can cost up to $500 so just buying one isn't in the budget for some for us (a.k.a. me). For those of you in the same boat as I am, we are going to have to make one. Don't worry, they are really not as difficult as you think! I truly don't understand the price of the store bought stand because they can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make.
There are many different ways to make a grow stand. You can start from scratch and build it all the way up yourself with 2X4s and some plywood. Or you can simply hand your grow lights over a table. I am going to be using a metal shelving unit from IKEA that I already have in my garage, so you can use anything you want! The most important part of your grow stand is, of course, the lights. You need fluorescent lights and they all need to be the same wattage. Also, another important thing is a cool place to grow. Once your plants germinate, you want to try and keep them at about 60 degrees. A garage or a room that never seems to be that warm is the perfect place.
Now that you have an idea for what you want, it's time to hop to it! I have included a few websites below of all the different kinds of grow stands that range from beginner to advanced, so you can find one that is perfect for you.
