The California State Fair will start on a hot streak. Every year the fair coordinators hope the hope hot streak is not just a blazing hot summer day but a hot list of activities and exhibits that draw in thousand of visiting fans. The fair runs July 11 through July 17 this year of 2014. As always, the traditional fair favorites will occupy the attention of many with food, rides, games, exhibits, shows, horses, music, cultural highlights and so much more.
Everyone has their personal taste for what they favor and sometimes it's a good idea to stretch the eye's focus and take in something new each year. That something new may be someone else's annual favorite like the Splash event with dogs running the plank to leap and stretch the furthest into a big pool surrounded by dog lovers. For others, they may head straight to the horse races to watch the hooves thunder, the glorious bodies shine in the sun as they work furiously to reach the finish line. Some favor the gardens and the agricultural center and like to take their time strolling through the plantings that will be harvested later and typically donated to a charitable center. The flowers call with their bright faces, the sheep summon as they get trimmed or herded. The cows and pigs show off their size, their markings, their health. The rides wave in bright colors and spinning motion. Games harken, food tantalizes, cars may smash in the derby all for the entertainment of the California State Fair fans.
The debate about the date change from August to mid-July has sparked many comments and input but at the bottom line it does make so much more sense to push up the fair date to take place before school starts. School dates have changed through the years to be earlier in August so better to have the fair start and complete before the kids groan or smile with anticipation that school is about to begin again. This will be the fourth year for the July start date. Last year saw an increase in attendance by 6.5% over the prior year.
The theme this year is "Its the Best." While many people may not register that there is a new theme each year, the ads always promote that theme; and, special activities, shows and highlights typically embrace that them. This year, the fair is proud to say that the"California State Fair has recognized the best in the Golden State for more than 160 years....We’ll be awarding the finest in California wines, craft brews and cheeses. Showcasing the oldest and newest professional sports in town, horse racing and soccer. And celebrating the most innovative living exhibit, “The Farm” presented by Save Mart Supermarkets."
