As if current state budget problems were not enough, a recent study conducted by the Institute for Alternative Futures, funded by Novo Nordisk, identified California, Texas, Florida, New York, Ohio, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Michigan as "diabetes hot spots," where the physical and economic burden of diabetes will be the greatest in the next 15 years.
The study, designed to ascertain the effect of diabetes on regional economies, estimated that the number of people in the United States living with diabetes will increase 64 percent, from 32.3 million today to 53.1 million by 2025, or one in seven Americans.
The ten hot spot states are currently burdened with nearly 60 percent of the country’s costs from diabetes, or approximately $176 billion of the total US estimate of $299 billion. The projected costs just for these ten states is estimated to increase to $297 billion in 15 years.
For California alone, by 2025, the projected cost of this disease is $63.63 billion, with 6.6 million people living with diabetes.
Clearly, this is an area where preventive medicine and healthy living practices would have an enormous effect not only on individual health, but the economy as well.
