Many women who have tried it consider The Brazilian Blowout about the best hair treatment ever invented. Alas the FDA and California attorney general don’t agree. While neither argues about its efficacy, the concern centers on the amount of harmful levels of formaldehyde found in the product. As a result, many Los Angeles salons are either dropping the treatment or finding other Keratin products with smaller doses of the chemcial.
One such shop is Byu-Ti Salon in Santa Monica, where your LA Beauty Products Examiner spent two hours today having their version of the hair flattening, shine-inducing treatment. While owner Natasha Sunshine, who professes to follow an organic, natural approach to beauty services, says, "they started out using the Brazilian Blowout product, they quickly switched after hearing the warnings. "Our clients clamor for it,” said Rae Barnes, the esthetician who did my treatment, many don’t care about the formaldehyde; after all, it’s in everything.”
A heavily product-driven shop that uses and sells Pureology and Redken brands, Byu-Ti’s alternative to the BB is Lassio, a product that contains less of the harmful chemical but provides just as much bang for buck ($350 for the two hour session).
