BYU goes to WCC, shuns WAC

BYU announced that it will officially leave the Mountain West Conference and become independent in football effective in the 2011 season.  They will also join the West Coast Conference for its other sports.

The school had until September 1 to make a decision.  Initially earlier this month the school had been entertaining joining the WAC with football being independent.  Those plans obviously went on hold once the announcement that Nevada and Fresno St. were leaving the WAC to go to the MWC.

In the arrangement with the WAC had it gone through, Hawaii would have benefited with a home and home series with the Cougars that would have rekindled the rivalry established during the original WAC era.  Reportedly talks between UH AD Jim Donovan and BYU were ongoing about the football scheduling regardless of the school's decision prior to today's announcement.

A press conference will be held Wednesday at 12:00n MST with further details.
