BYU football: Graduate assistant Shaun Nua accepts job at Navy

BYU graduate assistant Shaun Nua has accepted a full-time coaching position with fellow independent Navy as its defensive line coach.

Following a four-year NFL career with Pittsburgh and Buffalo, Nua returned to BYU as a graduate assistant in 2009 where he has been since.

Nua played defensive end for BYU from 2002 to 2004 as a transfer from Eastern Arizona Junior College in Thatcher, Ariz., redshirting the 2003 season. He earned All-Mountain West Conference Second Team honors his senior season.

Nua was drafted out of BYU in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft by Pittsburgh, where he spent three seasons with the Steelers and one season with Buffalo. Pittsburgh won Super Bowl XL against Seattle during his Nua’s rookie season.

“Shaun is a bright and enthusiastic coach and I'm very excited to have him join our staff,” said Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo.

BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall added of Nua, “He has an outstanding defensive mind blended with great optimism, and he is an excellent teacher who cares for the players in his charge. Our players and coaches are sorry to see him leave, but excited for him and his opportunity at Navy. Shaun has a very bright future in the coaching profession.”

“I am very excited to be at Navy,” said Nua in a statement issued by the Naval Academy. “I have so much respect for these young men and what they do here ... and what they are going to do after graduation. I am fired up about having a role in helping these young men progress on the football field and I am very grateful that Coach Niumatalolo has given me this opportunity.”
