In the wake of the failed NBA talks that have pushed the 2011-12 season to the brink of extinction, I’m afraid my apathy has spilled over into the way I view the whole college football conference realignment brouhaha.
Particularly, I’m sick of hearing about the realignment scenarios that have BYU football going to the Big East, Big 12 or remaining an independent. Sick of the talk that has any team joining a conference it is not currently a member of.
In case nobody’s noticed, there’s a football season going on. How about we give more attention to what’s going on right now and save all of this realignment nonsense until at least after the BCS Championship game in January?
If BYU gets invited to the Big 12, Big East/West (my choice of designation, not theirs) or remains an independent, what does it matter?
Game days will still be on Fridays or Saturdays from September through November. Cougar football will still be on the air. BYU games will remain a second or third viewing choice for most viewers outside of Utah or will be watched because it’s the only game to choose from.
Enough already. Please.
Enough of the theories on why BYU would make a good addition to the Big East or Big 12. Enough of the posturing for national respect—which is probably not coming—and hoping for a shot at a BCS bowl or BCS title game. What’s going to happen is going to happen regardless of what any of us say or think.
Looking at it realistically, BYU’s chances at a BCS bowl or the BCS title game as an independent or member of a BCS conference are, respectively, slim and slimmer.
BYU’s independence is a good fit, a course it should keep. Then again, if it wants to join a conference, have at it.
I—and a lot of you, I suspect—are sick and tired of it all and really don’t care at this point.
