BYU football: Absence makes the heart grow fonder

For the first weekend since late August, BYU football will not grace the airwaves with its quest to prove itself as a college football independent.

What to do, what to do?

The absence of BYU football this weekend might be a good time to reacquaint yourself with your family and non-football-loving friends. Or get to those pesky household chores you’ve been putting off the last nine weeks. Nah! Late summer and early fall weekends were created to watch stuff.

With that in mind and as a public service, I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a list of things to watch or do to fill your BYU football-less weekend. Please take these suggestions liberally and call me in the morning.

  1. BYU men’s basketball. The Cougars host Dixie State in the team’s final exhibition game before opening the season on Nov. 11 at Utah State. The post-Jimmer era begins with a roster that sports nine freshmen and Brandon Davies, who missed the final eight games of last season due to personal issues. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. tonight at the Marriott Center and can be viewed on BYUtv.
  2. Alabama-LSU. In the biggest matchup of the season to date, No. 2 Alabama hosts No. 1 LSU at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS. Before you dismiss this game as a BCS-created matchup between No. 1 and No. 2, consider the fact these teams hold their respective rankings in each of the major polls. That includes the coaches’ poll which, as a rule, is made up of a panel of voters who know the game and its talent a little more intimately than sports writers or computers do. Prediction: Alabama 35 LSU 31.
  3. Puss in Boots. No, this isn’t a dig at BYU football, it’s the top-grossing movie from last weekend. Who doesn’t love the foreign feline from the Shrek 2 through Shrek 4 movies? I haven’t seen this movie, but can the majority of American be wrong? If a computer-animated kitty isn’t your cup of tea, Tower Heist with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy is opening this weekend. Or how about A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas? I think I’ll pass on that last one.
  4. DVR. If your weekends are incomplete without BYU football from September through November, watch a Cougar game on your DVR. Be honest, we know you have at least one. I would recommend the Idaho State game; it is the only game the Cougars have dominated this season. Then again, you could catch up on those Law and Order episodes you’ve been meaning to get to.
  5. NBA. What’s that? Oh, yeah! Seems the owners and players have yet to settle their differences over who gets how much of the massive money pool in question. Who’s gonna win this debate? Doesn’t matter, really. If they put together a 2011-12 season, the money pool is going to be considerably smaller, meaning both sides lose.
  6. Christmas shopping. There’s only seven weekends left before Christmas and still three BYU football games to go, so now might be a good time to get a jump on your holiday shopping. I hear Walmart has brought back its holiday lay-a-way program.
