BYU anticipates Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

It's not very often that a technology mogel comes to Utah, so it was a real treat to hear from Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook. Invited by Orrin Hatch, Mark (as he prefers to be called) came to BYU to talk about technology and the future.

Using a Facebook event page, BYU asked people to list questions that would be asked of Mark. 450 questions were narrowed down to a dozen.

While waiting for Mark and Senator Hatch to arrive, I asked some of the other attendees what they were hoping to learn:

  • Renato (and wife Ilka) Barbosa from Brazil, an English student at BYU was there to gather information for a Communications class assignment and learn something new.
  • Russ Taylor, a current BYU Student in the IS program thought that this will be a cool opportunity to hear from someone who has made a huge difference in world. Not to mention Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest self-made millionaire!
  • Russ' friend and fellow IS student, Riley Jenkins said that he could spend all day learning about the bridge between business and technology and was excited to learn more from Zuckerberg who is a prime example of someone who created a new market. Jenkins sees Zuckerberg as the pinnacle of who he would want to be someday.
  • Dallin Hatch, a Junior PR student from BYU thinks that Mark Zuckerberg is a big deal; he’s somewhat controversial and since BYU doesn't get speakers like this at BYU very often, he wanted to make sure to be in attendance. Dallin was somewhat surprised that BYU is having Zuckerberg here and sure glad for it!
  • Steven Nordstrom, a Librarian at the Harold b. Lee Library on BYU campus, was there because he is interested in what Zuckerberg has to say about future of technology and Social Media.

Generally speaking, Zuckerberg was able to share some thoughts about the future of technology and education. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to spend more time getting into his thoughts about the future of technology. Oh well, that's what happens when you allow a pandering politician to lead the conversation. BYU had many better options for an interviewer that could've really drawn out more details and ideas from Mark. Hopefully next time we'll do a better job when an amazing trend setter and futuristic thinker comes to campus.
