The Jimmer Fredette era may have ended at BYU, but the man behind the Jimmer Mania legend lives on in Sacramento.
In a role quite different from when he played in Provo, Fredette comes off the bench for the Kings (3-5) and averages 9.4 points in just over 25 minutes per game.
In spite of his 36.7-percent field goal shooting and 31.4 average from behind the arc, Fredette has shown glimpses of his past glory. He’s also been talked about as a Rookie of the Year candidate.
There’s still a lot of basketball to be played before that trophy is handed out, but it seems Fredette has already made enough of a splash to make a name for himself in the NBA.
As one of the few professional athletes that are widely-known by a single name, it looks like he’s in the league for the long haul, though don’t hold your breath for him to finish his career in Sacramento.
Fredette is under contract to the Kings for two years. He’ll make $2.3 million this season and $2.5 million next season. Pretty fly for a white guy.
Although Fredette seems like a loyal guy, how long can someone who is used to winning linger with a team that is so used to losing?
Fast forward to the 2013 offseason.
The Utah Jazz have finally decided to do what it takes to build an NBA champion. Of the big moves the team makes, they add Fredette to their roster to the wild approval of its fiercely-loyal fan base.
Now that is a situation in which Fredette could thrive for the long haul.
Given the right marquee name—can you say Dwight Howard?—Fredette would make an ideal accessory to help get the Jazz in the neighborhood of the O’Brien Trophy.
In the meantime, Fredette can sharpen his skills in northern California until his date with destiny brings him to Salt Lake City.
