Byler, Wolf Pack trounce Santa Clara

Austin Byler drove in five runs Tuesday night to lead the Nevada Wolf Pack to a 9-4 victory over Santa Clara at Peccole Park.

The Wolf Pack, now 16-14, has won three games in a row. Santa Clara fell to 13-19.

Byler's single brought home Kyle Hunt and Kewby Meyer to tie the score at two in the first inning. Byler later scored in the inning a double steal to put the Pack ahead 3-2.

Byler also doubled in Hunt and Meyer once again to give the Pack a 5-2 lead in the second inning. The first baseman then slugged a home run in the fourth inning, his fifth home run of the year, for a 7-3 Wolf Pack lead.

Trenton Brooks also drove in a run in the fourth on a double. The Pack's final run scored in the sixth on pinch hitter Jordan Dunatov's sacrifice fly.

Four Pack pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 15 batters. Starter Tyler Wells recorded five strikeouts, Evan McMahan struck out four, Colby Blueberg had four and Brooks had two. McMahan earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits.

Brad Gerig had two hits and scored two runs for the Pack.

The Wolf Pack hosts San Diego State (25-8, 10-5 in the Mountain West) for a three-game Mountain West series starting Friday night at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game starts at 2 p.m. and the final game on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
