Bye bye 2012, hello 2013! My top wine trends looking forward and back

Happy New Year! As we enter 2013, I am looking forward to all the top wine trends, and looking back to a great 2012. This examiner moved from Boston to NY, and found inspiration in new areas in 2012, and it has me very excited about 2013!

Looking back at my top 2012 wine trends

Malbec Mania: I gravitated to Malbec all year long, due to its easy drinking and fruity qualities. I love a good Malbec, especially a budget-friendly one, like Cigar Box, and look forward to more in 2012.

Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere: Bubbly took center stage as I substituted it for many a good red this year. Champagne and it's sister Sparkling Wine were a big part of my year. Though I still have a lot to explore, spots like Flute in Gramarcy or Midtown may help me through this journey.

Old World Wine Time - I really began re-appreciating wines from the "old school", like French Pinot Noir and Italian Vermentino. These subtle wines lend well to a base understanding of the grapes we know so well, and some we don't like the Tissot Singular which I tried at Bar Boulud.

New World Wining and Dining - Moving to NYC has meant better wine dining deals, and I have leveraged sites like Groupon to get biodynamic Cava at Flute, and wine dinners at Le Cirque Cafe. Keeping on the lookout for these great deals makes exploring wine dining all the more special.

Looking forward to 2013 wine trends

Waka, Waka Africa: I hope to see more from Africa this year, not just South Africa (which is amazing and can be found at bars like Xai Xai). I hope to hear from emerging regions like Ethopia this year, so bring it on!

Uncommon States: I love exploring wines from all the states in the US, they speak about the personality and climate of the area, and the passion of the farmers. Hoping to get to explore more states and more US wine this year!

Wine Travel: Argentina maybe, and maybe more...I am all about wine travel, wine tours, and wine time in 2013. There are so many cool places to visit and groups exploring them!

Cool Wine Companies: 90+ Cellars gave me a first look at companies trying to change the wine game, and I am all in. I am on the lookout for cool wine companies to follow in 2013!

Happy 2013 to you and yours, and cheers to a year in wine!
