Buzzfeed enthusiastically introduces readers to asexuality

Buzzfeed, a popular news and gossip website, offered an introduction to asexuality. The piece appeared on the website early morning Friday. The reporter approaches the topic with enthusiasm, although some of his passages are confusing.

The section that explains the difference between celibacy and asexuality is particularly unclear, although the gist is that not all celibate people are asexual, and not all asexuals are celibate.

Like many stories before it, it focuses on the existence of asexuals. It contains a brief section of instructions that let readers know how they can support someone who comes out as ace. Most asexuals exist story do not provide such information.

The Buzzfeed author manages to make one point about coming out that cannot be stressed enough. Curious and worried friends, who would never ask this question under normal circumstances, inevitably ask about the ace's masturbation habits. All the normal rules about social propriety do not end when someone comes out as asexual, but skeptical friends seek any number of alternate explanations. The questions do not end with masturbation Friends and family often speculate that the person who made the revelation suffered from abuse, religious repression, or not having met the right person.
