When buying a new laptop/tablet, there are many things to consider. You need to ask yourself questions such as; What will it be used for ? Who will use it ? What environment will it be in or exposed to ?Laptops/tablets in general can be found at most retail outlets. You can pay as little as $250 with the price climbing into the $1000's. It all depends on the three aformentioned questions. That being said, if you are looking for something kid proof or rather life/job proof, you need to understand that laptops like this should carry a set of features and certifications second to none.
That being said, if you are looking for something kid proof or rather life/job proof, you need to understand that laptops like this should carry a set of features and certifications second to none.
That being said, when you are looking for something truly tough, don’t just look for water resistance, dust resistance, etc, you need to look for qualities such as drop and shock proof, dust and sand proof, etc. You want certifications and standards such as IP43 for dust and water resistance. You will also want it to meet military standard 810G standards for drop and shock resistance. How about temperature resistance? Well if you work outside, make sure it can function as low as 0 degrees F.
So here’s the catch to all of that. If you go to your favorite search engine (google for example), and enter the search string of “IP43 rated and 810G rated laptops”, you will notice aside from the usual junk links, the top hits appear to come from a company called Gammatech and their line of Durabooks. Not withstanding other “Tough” type computers, but you really have to go a couple of pages into it to see anything BUT Gammatech and their Durabooks.
In researching, it appears that there is one model that is on top of the search string;
- The Durabook CA10 Tablet
This is one of the newest offerings from GammaTech and it shows with all of its technical features such as;
- A hot swappable battery
- Quick menu support for RF Devices, barcode readers a RFID devices
- Clearview M ATOM Processor
- m-SATA Storage
It goes without saying, that it also has GammaTech’s rugged and durable certifications.
There are two more GammaTech products that come to the top of the search string. The first is the TA10 Tablet. Again, top in its class with its specs which include the legendary GammaTech durability and certifications, as well as;
- The Intel Ivy Bridge Family of Processors
- HDD up to ¾ Terrabyte (optional SSD)
- Biometric Finger Print Scanner
- MIL-STC 810G 509.5 salt/fog protection
Lastly, is what could be called the crème de la crème. The SA14 model sports all of GammaTechs durability and (everything proof) qualities, but also boasts a whopping 11 hours of battery life.
It incorporates either the intel core i5 or i7 processor with a choice of the mibile intel express chipsets. It is standard with Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 3.0. Along with fingerprint scanning, it can (optionally) incorporate a smart card reader. Its backlit keyboard can also be customized with a waterproof option.
The TA10 starts at $2,300, while the SA14 and CA10 are each under $1,500. These are base prices and come with stock options. However, if you want too, whether it be a necessity or desire, GammaTech is extremely customer service orientated and will customize any model for your application.
