JJ (Jennifer Johnson) has a wealth of experience working with communities and education--both of which are valuable to understanding and operating a Local Business Alliance. She has a Masters degree in special education and several years of experience in the public school system. JJ has spent many years in business in a variety of roles such as sales, marketing and consulting. She has served as a director for several organizations. Since 2006, she has served the local independent business community of Boulder by directing outreach and collaborating with business and organizations for the Boulder County Going Local effort. She currently serves as Executive Director of the Boulder Independent Business Alliance. Her work includes managing the organization, marketing the message, collaborating with other local organizations, working with the community, and coordinating events and projects.
Rick Brooks is Vice President of Wisconsin Partners for SustainAbility and co-founder of Dane Buy Local, an alliance of 450 local, independently-owned businesses in and around Madison. An outreach program manager at the University of Wisconsin, he has more than 30 years of experience in community development, social marketing, publishing and entrepreneurship in both the public and private sector. He has served on the boards of more than 25 U.S. and international nonprofit organizations and coordinated comprehensive communication programs in public health, youth development, hunger prevention, human services and grassroots empowerment. In the past decade he served as a founding board member or executive board member of the Dane County TimeBank, Envest Microfinance Cooperative and the Madison Community Food and Gardening Network, Wisconsin SHARE (Self Help and Resource Exchange,a statewide food and volunteer program) and Sarvodaya USA, which supports the largest nongovernment organization in Sri Lanka in 15,000 villages
