New year, new fees. MBTA implemented a surcharge to all commuter rail passes being bought on the train rather than in the station. If you are departing from a station that has an open ticket window or ticket vending machine and decide to skip the line and buy a ticket on-board, be prepared to pay an extra $3 per ticket.
Salem station stop does not have a ticket window or a ticket vending machine as this is an outdoor stop. Meaning you will not get charged that $3 surcharge for purchasing a ticket on-board the train.
Still weary about buying a ticket on the train? You can purchase tickets at the Red Lion Smoke Shop on Washington Street in Salem, only a few minutes down the road from the station if you are walking. (Red Lion Smoke Shop, 94 Washington St., Salem, MA)
