It seems that every day brings some new story of animal cruelty. Recently a woman in England pretended to befriend a cat before tossing it into a garbage bin. Closer to home, three kittens in Rappahannock County were sealed up in a trash bag and abandoned by the side of the road; only one of them survived. In April of this year, a cat was stoned to death in the District. Last summer in Baltimore, a kitten was set on fire—twice. Many other stories of cruelty and neglect involving cats, dogs and other animals have gone unreported. The stories that do get reported leave heartbroken animal lovers asking two questions: Why does this happen? and What can we do about it?
Humane education offers part of the answer to the second question. This Friday, September 24, local animal lovers can directly support the humane education program of the Washington Animal Rescue League by buying books at Politics and Prose. When customers present a league coupon at checkout, the bookstore will donate 20 percent of the purchase price to the league’s humane education program. That program works with children in elementary and middle schools, teaching them about animals and how to treat furry companions with respect and kindness. The program also features a strong reading component—the children read books about animals and even read books aloud to dogs. A list of needed books will be available at the store so customers can buy one or more of those books and donate them directly to the league.
Politics and Prose is located at 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW. They will be open Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The league coupons are available online and at the store.
