Butterfly Lovers: Musical Impressions of modern China in Oakland!

On Saturday March 3, 2012 the Oakland Asian Cultural Center and China’s Spirit Music Ensemble (CSME) will present a concert called “Butterfly Lovers: Musical Impressions of Modern China”.

The concert will center around the “guzheng” (pronounced: ‘goo-jung’) a Chinese twenty-one string zither that has a bright shimmering Asian sound.

Featured artists will be guzheng virtuoso Winnie Wong, Asian Fusion ensemble Ultra World X-tet, and China’s Spirit Music Ensemble a collection of accomplished youth guzheng performers.

Concert highlights will include: “Butterfly Concerto” arranged by Winnie Wong. “Highlands of Tibet”, “Night Market Brothers”, and “Dao Lang Melody” will showcase the Sino-jazz fusion stylings of Ultra World X-tet and “Tune of Rainbow Cloud” brings together guzheng soloist Winnie Wong with Frances Martin on piano.

Furthermore, there will be an opportunity to bring back the memories of Hong Kong in the 60s-80s with the medley “Hong Kong Glory" consisting of three songs of Hong Kong made popular by Paula Tsui (80’s), Samuel Hui (70’s) and Chen Qi Song (60’s).

The concert is sure to be accessible to Western and Asian audiences alike and will be filled with exceptional musicianship, exotic instruments, and sparkling tone colors. This will be a rare opportunity to experience the future of modern Chinese music.
