The return for 20/20 pampering
“I needed a lift,” is a common response to why a woman would try a new beauty treatment. One woman in particular, who asked to keep her beauty secret just that, had just had eyelash extensions applied to her lashes. Lash extensions are the newest eye treatment on the North Shore, and the expert in the business of lashes is Nicole Cerra of Beauty Secrets in Charlestown (www.beautysecretstudio.com).

When someone has extensions done correctly, you won’t notice that they’re synthetic lashes, but you might notice something different, like maybe this woman had put on a little makeup, or found a great mascara – and looks great. Unless this anonymous woman announced what she had done, you wouldn’t have been able to guess she had eyelash extensions.

Day spas are beginning to offer this new eyelash service, but many estheticians who perform the service are not skilled enough to do the job as well as Cerra, who trains others in addition to performing the service half the time she works between her locations in Middleton and in Charlestown. The other half of her time is spent applying permanent makeup.

Cerra’s technique is perfected, and if you talk to enough people who have received the lash extensions, you’ll hear an array of experiences, depending on who performed the service. Eyelash extensions should not pull on the eyelid, which can happen if lashes are glued onto the lid or applied to three lashes at a time.

For active women who don’t want mascara to smear or smudge but want a sophisticated look, eyelash extensions are a great option but to bat these eyelashes would cost more than the average gift ? not in the price range of a gift you would give to someone ($250), unless you’re a significant other, and if so, whoa … what a great gift. The maintenance fee, however, must be factored in at an additional $50-$100 every four weeks, depending on where you go.

Cerra says she customizes each set of lashes to what you’re looking for, and then figures in your eyes, brows and facial shape, plus she factors in your lifestyle. The pricing may seem steep, but when you compare the cost of acrylic nails and the maintenance of fills, coupled with pedicures, eyebrow waxing, etc., the cost of lash extensions is comparable.

Holiday parties offer the perfect excuse to splurge on a treat for yourself, and eyelash extensions are a great touch as an accessory, perfect for those who want to add a touch of glamour that could extend beyond the holiday season, ringing in the New Year.
