Butler McCook House and Garden

The Butler McCook House and Garden is home to four generations that witnessed the evolution of Hartford on Main Street. It has a Victorian ornamental garden that was designed in 1865. Inside the home there is Victorian era furniture, toys, and painting and other acquired object. They collected many of these antiques when traveling around the world.

They feature special tours with specific themes like Portrait Painting and Landscapes. In this tour, visitors learn about the extensive art collection including some by family members learned through world trave. There is a special tour that focuses on the McCook World Travel with journals, paintings, and objects collected when traveling in China, Japan, Africa and the United States.

They have several youth programs for children during the year like Drawing in the Garden, and Create a Cityscape. Admission is usually $5 per student with one hands on activity. On August 5, at 6 p.m to 8 p.m.. enjoy World Sounds in the Garden Concert Series at 6 p.m. Bring something to sit in and and picnic dinner with you. The first concert is Doubcar Diebate with African music. On August 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. enjoy the sounds of Joey Milardo and The Musical Cavaliers featuring Polish music at its best.

When you visit the museum they are involved in several joint program with other museums and organization. They have several walking tours that can be arranged. They often includes visiting and seeing others sites. One of the tours are Discovering Hartford's Main Street. On this tour visitors will see City Hall, The Wadsworth Atheneum, The Travelers Tower, the Old State House, and the Ancient Burying Ground. Another tour is discovering Hartford's Urban Parks and Outdoors. Visitors will see statutes and sculpures and visit Stone Fields, The Corning Fountain, Solider and Sailor Memorial Arch and Nathan Hale statue.

Admission to the museum is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-18. It is located at 396 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06106. Call 860-522-1806 for more information. It is open for tours May thru September 12 to 4 p.m.
