Butera, Wolf Pack trounce UTSA

The Nevada Wolf Pack softball team extended its winning streak to four games Friday with a 10-0 victory over Texas-San Antonio in the home opener at Hixson Park.

The Pack, now 14-12, has won four games in a row for the first time since last April. The Wolf Pack's last five-game winning streak was in March 2010.

Ashley Butera hit two home runs against UTSA and drove in five runs. She hit a three-run home run in the first inning and a two-run shot in the third. Butera now has five home runs and 18 RBI this year on a .313 average.

Erin Jones had a perfect afternoon, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Jones now leads the Pack with a .417 average to go along with three homers and 23 RBI.

Megan Sweet had a RBI double in the five-run fourth and Karley Hopkins drove in two runs with a double of her own in the inning.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Karlyn Jones earned the victory, allowing just three singles and two walks in five innings. Jones is now 9-4 this year with a 3.27 earned run average.

The game lasted just 64 minutes and Jones had to throw just 56 pitches.

The Wolf Pack will play Northern Colorado at 12:30 p.m. at Hixson Park on Saturday followed by another game against UTSA.

UTSA fell to 14-10.
