Busy week of Pitt sports news

It was a busy week in sports at the University of Pittsburgh as important announcements were made regarding a variety of Pitt sports programs.

Sixteen Pitt football playerswere named to the Big East’s All-Academic Team (3.0 average or better) on Thursday.

Senior Myles Caragein made the list all four years at Pitt. Junior Mike Shanahan made it all three years at Pitt.

Second-year honorees included Kevin Harper, Marco Pecora, Andrew Taglianetti, Joe Trebitz, and Matt Yoklic.

First-time honorees included Joshua Brinson, Desmond Brown, Drake Greer, Jarred Holley, Adam Lazenga, Ray Vinopal, Kris Wildman, Chris Yankoski, and Brett Zuck.

It was also announced that Pitt will serve as host for the 2012 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships, which will take place on March 24 at Fitzgerald Field House.

On Tuesday, 284 scholar-athletes were honored at the Pitt Alumni Assocation's annual breakfast.

"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and their exceptional performances in the classroom," Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. "It takes an incredible amount of commitment, discipline and sacrifice to achieve Scholar-Athlete honors at the University of Pittsburgh. These young men and women truly embody the very best of Pitt and Pitt Athletics."

On the basketball front, Tray Woodall earned the Oscar Robertson Player of the Week award and the Big East Conference Player of the Week after averaging over 26 points a game in wins against West Virginia and Villanova.

Finally, former Panthers Chris Doleman, who played defensive end from 1981 to 1984 before playing 11 seasons in the NFL and running back Curtis Martin, who finished fourth all-time in the NFL in rushing yards, were named to this year's Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2012 induction class.

Pitt now has eight former players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame including four from the past two years as Russ Grim and Rickey Jackson were inducted two year ago. They join Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Mike Ditka, and Joe Schmidt. It ranks third behind only USC (11) and Notre Dame (10).
