Busy day Sunday with four ACC games involving local teams

Sunday is going to be one of those rare days where four ACC women’s basketball games involve teams from the Triangle.

That’s because N.C. Central is traveling to Virginia Tech on a day when Duke, UNC and N.C. State are all at home.

Three of the four games will be happening simultaneously.

No. 6 Duke (6-2) will try to bounce back from Thursday’s 72-65 loss at No. 10 Kentucky at 2 p.m., when USC Upstate visits Cameron Indoor Stadium. At the same time in Chapel Hill, No. 18 UNC (6-1) will host Upstate’s fellow Atlantic Sun conference member East Tennessee State (0-9), while NCCU (1-7) will visit Virginia Tech (2-6) in Blacksburg.

The other contest is at about 5:30, when N.C. State (5-2) hosts Alabama (7-3) in the second half of a Reynolds Coliseum double header beginning with a Wolfpack men’s game against NCCU.

The Blue Devils will be prohibitive favorites against the Spartans (1-7), who are in their first season of eligibility for the NCAA Division I Tournament after completing the transition from Division II. Upstate lost 91-34 to UNC on its other trip to the Triangle on Nov. 13.

Tee’Ara Copney (19.0, 4.0), a 5-7 junior guard, is by far the leading scorer for the Spartans, who will be meeting Duke for the first time.

Chay Shegog (16.0, 8.9) is the leading scorer for the Tar Heels, who whipped ETSU 87-47 last season and have five players averaging in double figures. UNC senior forward Laura Broomfield (14.0, 12.8) is nursing a problem in her left foot and is not expected to play. Freshman guard Brittany Rountree (11.3, 4.0 assts.), She’la White (10.7, 3.0 assts.) and Krista Gross (10.4, 8.0) are UNC’s other double-figure scorers.

Tarita Gordon (11.3, 2.9), a 5-5 senior guard, leads the Buccaneers.

Monet Tellier (17.0, 4.6), a 5-11 sophomore guard, and 5-8 junior guard Aerial Wilson (11.9, 4.5 assts.) lead the Hokies, who beat NCCU 85-44 two years ago.

Chasidy Williams (16.6, 8.0), a 6-foot junior wing, leads the Eagles.

State will be playing its second “Super Sunday” contest, a series of three games against SEC opponents.

Bonae Holston (13.5, 8.8) leads the Wolfpack, which lost 95-84 in Tuscaloosa last year. Marissa Kastanek (11.7, 3.6) and Kody Burke (10.3, 6.0) are State’s other double-figure scorers.
