Grapefruit, celery and cabbage soup have always been legendary for their powers to boost weight loss. But are there really "magic" foods that can burn more fat?
According to the special weight-loss issue of Healthy Cooking magazine, "No foods burn fat. Some caffeine may temporarily speed metabolism (the way your body uses calories), but they don't cause weight loss."
Here are some other weight-loss myths that are getting busted:
MYTH
"Low-fat" or "fat-free" means no calories.
FACT
Fat chance! Sure, some low-fat or fat-free foods have lower calories than their full-fat equivalent, but many contain added sugar, flour or starch thickeners to make them taste better. Truth is, removing the fat, removes the flavor. Adding other ingredients, adds calories.
MYTH
Eating after 8 p.m. packs on pounds.
FACT
If this was true, all the Europeans who eat dinner between 8 and 10 p.m. would be overweight. It's what and how much you eat throughout the day, along with how many calories you burn through physical activity, that determines whether you gain, lose or maintain your weight.
MYTH
A cup of 100% juice has the same calories as a cup of fruit.
FACT
Believe it or not, whole fruit has fewer calories per volume, plus the added benefit of more fiber. That means eating 1 cup of chopped fruit is a lower-calorie choice than drinking 1 cup of 100 percent fruit juice.
