A school bus driver literally kicked a special needs student off the bus after the girl allegedly slapped the driver. The girl fell and broke her ankle. The incident happened in September of last year in Hillsborough County, Fla. but authorities just released the video footage to the public on March 21 (see video).
The school bus driver was dropping the children off at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary on the morning of Sept. 28 when the incident occurred. It is reported bus driver Stephanie Wilkerson told the special needs girl it wasn't her turn to get off the bus. It was then the girl allegedly slapped and pushed Wilkerson.
When the girl finally did exit the school bus, Wilkerson was caught on video kicking the child in the back to get her off the bus. The video shows the child falling to the ground breaking her ankle (other sources report the child broke her fibula).
The school bus driver's actions were unacceptable and punishable by law. The proper disciplinary action in this case would have been to alert the driver's immediate supervisor for guidance on disciplinary measures for the child. Disciplinary actions should never involve physical harm to students.
The school bus driver was suspended without pay in November by the Hillsborough County School Board before she was fired from her job. She was charged with aggravated child abuse.
