Bus catches fire: A bus carrying a Junior Varisty football team from Central Catholic High School burst into flames on Highway 26 in Portland, Ore. Thr. night. KGW reports Sept. 5 that the bus caught on fire westbound near the Jefferson Street ramp. Portland Fire & Rescue rushed to the scene and extinguished the flames at about 5 p.m.
No injuries were on the Blue Star charter bus transporting the students. All of them were able to get off the bus safely.
Blue Star was transporting football athletes from Central Catholic to Sheldon High School for a game at Hillsboro Stadium. The game was scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., but it was canceled. The game will be scheduled as soon as possible.
The report added that the Blue Star bus is a Prevost H-series that sits 56 passengers. The company said it was driven by an experienced driver.
After the bus caught on fire, Highway was closed to one lane of traffic near the scene. Drivers were alerted to expect long delays and traffic backup from Clay and Jefferson on-ramps. Delays were also expected for Interstate 405.
A cause for the bus catching on fire hasn't been determined yet.
