Offering a burnt offering where the entire item is consumed or given is the ultimate object of worship towards God. When Noah came off the ark he presented a burnt offering of every clean animal to the Lord and it was a sweet fragrance unto God.http://www.ternestwilson.com/sac2.html
Under the new dispensation of grace, there are examples of believers doing what amounted to a burnt offering unto God when they sold all that they had and laid the proceeds down at the apostles’ feet to dispense as they saw fit. The very foundation of the place was shaken due to the power unleashed at their great sacrificial giving.
King Solomon is another example of making a tremendous sacrifice of burnt offerings to God by the thousands of consecrated animals. There was a powerful response by Yahweh God as afterwards God came to Solomon in a dream and inquired what Solomon would petition Him to do, even to the death of his enemies if Solomon desired.http://www.osc-tbs.org/?_path=_weekly&nid=162
Solomon’s answer pleased God so much that God not only gave Solomon the wisdom that would never be matched, but honor, riches, and long life also. God is in the habit of rewarding superb displays of obedience and trust.
God is particularly moved by the burnt offering which is entirely dedicated to God without any part being directed to the one making the offering. It is not an obligatory offering as the tithe where the giving of the tenth will open up opportunities for the Lord to bless and protect in return. There is no mandatory stipulation of God to do something for the burnt offering by the individual making it.
There is an order to giving which is established in the guidelines to the law of sowing and reaping that unleashes spiritual responses to what is given. There are a plethora of responses based on what is given and the motive behind it.
The widow woman casting her mites into the treasury received a response from Christ. People giving from their abundance indeed was a generous display, however the wealthy still had much substance left from the offerings. The widow woman cast all of her living into the treasury and received special recognition and probably much more for her incredible generosity.
Naturally the supreme sacrifice by Christ replaced the burnt offering per se, however the concept of the burnt offering is still appropriate in the form of great sacrificial giving as the widow woman committing all that she had or those that sell all of their possessions and gave to the church.
The Old Testament burnt offering was the ultimate expression of adoration and worship to God and completely eliminated any beneficial aspect going to oneself. The book of Leviticus detailed the distinctions of various offerings and clearly gave prominence to the burnt offering although other types of offerings were vitally critical.
There were sin offerings, guilt offerings, grain offerings, friendship offerings, meat offerings, peace offerings, and trespass offerings were designed to appease God’s wrath for the violating God’s law and to satisfy God’s justice. When one considers the wages of sin is death, it is a wonderful alternative to take advantage of the processes God has in place to bring reconciliation to the sinner.
A contrite heart where there is authentic regret and a nature of true repentance to not do the dastardly deed again will open the door for forgiveness from God and reconciliation back to Him which corrects the breech due to sin. God's grace is vast since when sin abounds, grace shall that much more abound as the Scriptures promise.
Obedience is better than sacrifice, and to harken than the fat of rams.
