Burns & McDonnell places 26th on Fortune's Best Places To Work list

Burns & McDonnell, headquartered in Kansas City, MO is ranked No. 26 on Fortune's "The 100 Best Companies to Work For" list, as published in the magazine's February 6, 2012 issue.

Burns & McDonnell is the only Kansas City headquartered company to make the list year. The last time it made the prestigious list was in 2009.  According to Fortune, what makes the engineering consulting company great is that:

  • It has been 100% employee-owned for 25 years
  • Turnover is less than 4%
  • Electrical engineers average $122,000 in annual compensation

Topping the list this year is Google, which moved up from its No. 4 position on last year's list.

  • Never having a layoff
  • Paying 100% of health care premiums
  • Offering paid sabbaticals
  • Sponsoring free smoking-cessation programs
  • Acting on employee suggestions
  • Allowing employees time to work on projects of their own each week
  • Having "reverse-mentoring programs" where junior staff help senior staff
  • Giving employees paid time off to volunteer in their community
