Burning Tibetan clubbed by Chinese police says activist group

The ongoing emotional pain shared by Buddhists over reports of continued self-immolations by Tibetans protesting Chinese rule has been compounded by a new report that the Chinese police clubbed a burning Tibetan. The Tibet Sun has reported "Group says Chinese police clubbed burning Tibetan." Exiled sources have said that Chinese police beat a Tibetan with clubs spiked with nails as he burnt to death last weekend and opened fire on a crowd of onlookers.

Losang Jamyang was the 16th Tibetan to do set himself on fire so in less than a year to protest against perceived repression by China. The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), who said the twenty-something Tibetan was a former monk, commented “He doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire. He walked into the street calling for the long life of the Dalai Lama and for freedom in Tibet. Police began to kick and beat him with clubs spiked with nails rather than immediately focusing on putting out the flames." ICT is based in the United States.

It is said that local Tibetans on the scene than stood up to the armed security personnel and while shouting that the body should be handed over to them, tried their best to block their path as they tried to take him away. The group says Chinese police then opened fire and two women were wounded when they were shot. A spokesman for the Chinese government in Ngaba, surnamed Wang, denied the accounts an said “What you read is a false report.” Tensions are high at this time between the Tibetans and Chinese government with Buddhists worldwide joining in prayers that the violence in Tibet will cease sometime soon.
