After the man, who has not been identified, lit himself on fire, a group of bystanders put him out with their shirts, according to a witness. Then man was then taken to an area hospital via helicopter.
Nicole Didyk, a D.C. resident said when she approached the scene, she saw 'flames on the Mall. ... Not like shooting flames, but the grass was on fire.' She then went on to say that she saw four or five men using their own shirts to beat out the flames. Didyk said one of men told her that the man had 'saluted the Capitol and then lit himself on fire.' Another man told Didyk that the man thanked them after the flames were out.
Meghan Van Heertum, an emergency room nurse, was also a witness. 'I smelled burnt flesh and put two and two together,' she said. Van Heertum said the whole thing seemed to last no more than 15 or 20 minutes and the man did not appear to be moving before he was taken to the hospital.
The man's condition is unknown.
