According to Kristen Odland of the Calgary Herald on Sunday, Calgary Flames general manager Brian Burke will try to trade defenseman Shane O'Brien before the National Hockey League trade deadline on March 5.
O'Brien was demoted on Sunday to the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League after notching only three assists in 45 games for the Flames this season. However, O'Brien was acquired by Calgary from the Colorado Avalanche with David Jones for Alex Tanguay and Cory Sarich for his toughness and not for his offensive skills. He did have 58 penalty minutes this year.
Still, one needs to wonder why a club would attempt to pick up O'Brien via trade when they could have had him through the waiver wire this past weekend (before he got sent down to Abbotsford) for absolutely nothing.
If Burke gets anything for O'Brien at this stage of the game, it benefits the Flames.
Calgary meanwhile will try to win their third straight game tonight when they host the Chicago Blackhawks at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.
