Burger King suspends Twitter account after hack, Mcdonald's claims innocence

Burger King's official twitter account was hacked earlier today according to several reports. The hackers tried to make it sound like McDonald's had bought out the company, but a spokesperson from McDonald's said they did not take part in the hack.

The pranksters fired off tweets like “if I catch you at wendys, we’re fightin!” before the breached account was suspended, the Associated Press reported.

Burger King's Twitter profile photo was changed to a McDonald's logo, and its profile information said, "Just got sold to McDonalds because the whopper flopped." It also included the misspelled line "FREDOM IS FAILURE" and a dead link to a press release.

Other messages reportedly contained racial epithets, curse words and references to drug use.

The McDonald's image used on the hacked @BurgerKing account was the same picture of the new Fish McBites used on the @McDonalds account.

McDonald's quickly claimed they were not the culprits.

"We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking." - @McDonalds

Burger King told the AP it plans to post a statement on Facebook later Monday to apologize, especially for the offensive posts. The company said it hopes to have the Twitter account back up soon.

As of 9:30 p.m. this evening, Burger King's twitter account is not back up, and no statement on Facebook has been released.
