Western New Yorker’s will see many changes over the next 12 months to local Burger King restaurants. Yesterday Burger King announced massive changes to not only its menu, but also to employee uniforms, restaurant décor and its marketing strategy. Burger King is introducing four new “Garden Fresh” salad options, all served with Ken’s salad dressings. New salad choices include a chicken, apple and cranberry salad; a chicken BLT salad; a chicken Caesar salad; and a side salad with mixed greens.
Real fruit smoothies made with low-fat yogurt are also new on the menu. Sold in 16-ounce size, choices include strawberry banana ,310 calories and 60 grams of sugar, or tropical mango, 330 calories and 63 grams of sugar.
Other new menu items at Burger King:
Frappés: a frozen, blended coffee drink, available in either mocha or caramel flavors. Frappés are topped with whipped cream and either chocolate or caramel syrup.
Homestyle chicken strips: available in either 3 or 5 piece portions, the new chicken strips went through 11 taste tests before the final version was selected.
Crispy chicken snack wrap: wrapped in a flour tortilla and served with lettuce and shredded cheese, Burger King’s new snack wrap is almost identical to McDonald’s. Snack wrap options are limited to crispy chicken with a choice of either ranch or honey mustard sauce for dipping.
French fries: Burger King’s new fries are less salty and have a thicker coating meat to help themf stay warm longer. The new fries have received mixed reviews. Consumer Reports says:
“[Burger King’s] new fries are appealing, but not irresistible. They have decent potato flavor and a baked-potato texture inside, and they’re moderately salty and fairly crispy. They’re better than the chain’s former fries, which were low in flavor and had a fatty taste.”
What else is new at Burger King? The Miami-based restaurant chain rolled out home delivery at four Washington, D.C. area locations in January, and the program has expanded to include 16 additional restaurants. Burger King home delivery is expected to have a national rollout in the near future. Orders for home delivery must be at least $8 ($10 in some locations), along with a $2 delivery fee.
Burger King restaurants and employees are getting an upgrade, too. Within the next year Burger King will remodel over 1,000 locations, with an additional 1,500 over the next three years. Upgrades to Burger King restaurants include softer lightening and updated, more modern furniture. Burger King employees are now wearing slate gray instead of the old dark blue, black, and red. A new mess-proof apron has been added to the Burger King employees uniforms, designed with the help of employees.
