New Jersey State senator and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Barbara Buono marked the 40 year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade by stating in a press release on Jan. 22, 2013, in which she criticized Governor Chris Christie for his stance on a woman’s right to choose.
Buono stated “we must do everything we can to reduce unintended pregnancies, but a woman’s choices about her body and her health should be made by her and her family alone. Sadly, Chris Christie is the only New Jersey governor since Roe vs. Wade to oppose a woman’s right to choose. Not only has he supported anti-abortion groups committed to overturning Roe, Christie has slashed funding for Planned Parenthood and women’s health across our state.” Buono added “Governor Christie’s hostility and opposition to women’s reproductive freedom sends a clear message that he is far outside the mainstream of New Jersey voters and our values.”
Buono is the only democratic candidate that has officially challenged Christie for his seat, and the first democratic woman to run for Governor in the state’s history.
