The nice folks at The Hare Apparent, makers of the Ugli Donut, have many other wonderful items for bunnies. Another item that caught my eye is the Bunny Hugger, a great invention that would be perfect for a bunny with limited mobility or any bunny.
The Bunny Hugger is a sort of bed which has two bolsters on either side with a flatter portion in the center. This bed is perfect for tripod bunnies, head-tilt bunnies who need propping or any bunny who is poorly or lonely. In the case of my head-tilt bunny Arctic, she had lost some mobility in her back legs and was unable to climb in or out of a bed, but would have been able to shuffle into the Bunny Hugger for support and then shuffle out.
The Bunny Hugger filling is of soft carded and washed British lambswool. The outside is a soft, finely knitted wool and acrylic blend in colors of warm beige and cream. Bunnies enjoy the feel of laying on knitted wool and acrylic and are much less likely to chew on them than on other fabrics. Wool and acrylic blends are water resistant, fast drying, won’t hold odors, and are good at temperature regulating (bunny won’t overheat nor have his body warmth wicked away from him). The Bunny Hugger can be machine washed on the handwash cycle in cold water and hung up to dry.
Bunnies will find this shape comforting and supportive to lay between; shop owner Mrs. Masha theorizes that the Bunny Huggers replicates the feel of napping or relaxing together with other bunnies. Veterinarian-recommended, the Bunny Hugger comes in handy when clipping nails as well.
The Bunny Hugger measures 22 inches long and 13 inches wide; the sides contain wool stuffing and the flatter portion in the center has quilt batting which is sewn down and well anchored so as not to bunch up if washed. The Bunny Hugger is a good size for a large to giant bunny as well as two smaller buns to share (author’s added note: a little Velcro ‘hook’ strip sewn on the underneath edge of the center portion will stick to the knitted fabric and make this adjustable for one small bunny).
