Bungie releases information about their new title 'Destiny' (Photos)

"Destiny" was leaked almost a year ago in May 2012 from court documents in the case of Activision vs. Infinity Ward. Bungie, the creators of the Halo franchise, took the leaked information in stride and confirmed the information in a post on Bungie's homepage saying "So, yeah. While we’re not ready to show you what we’ve been working on, we can reconfirm that we are hard at work on our new universe. We can’t wait for you to see it. See you starside in 2013." Fast forward to today Feb. 17, 2013 and Bungie has released their first video detailing the story and some gameplay footage of their new sci-fi first person shooter. Bungie describes the background for the game as:

Everything changed with the arrival of the Traveler. It sparked a Golden Age when our civilization spanned the solar system, but it didn't last. Something hit us, knocked us down. The survivors built a city beneath the Traveler, and have begun to explore our old worlds, only to find them filled with deadly foes. You are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, able to wield incredible power. Defend the City. Defeat our enemies. Reclaim all that we have lost.

The video is still vague on the details of the game, but Bungie has said before that it will be "social at its core" and that the game is "reaching players in ways we haven't before." In the video documentary, Bungie says the goal was to "build an experience that's meaningful to people" and to keep players interested even after playing 50 to 100 hours while enticing people to play with their friends. The game itself is described as "something alive" where things will happen inside the game that are not planned but in a good way. "We've gone from continuing to make Halo games to doing something, which certainly draws on our past experiences and plays to our strengths, but it's new and exciting. It's going to take a life on it's own", says Bungie in the documentary.

Initial rumors were that this would be an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) title but so far Bungie has not confirmed what type of game this is other than "Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay, including story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes combined with public and social activities." The way they talk about the game and describe it as having a life of its own suggests the game will feature a more vast campaign versus that of Halo. We know that this game will be on the Xbox 360 (and the successor to the Xbox 360 as well) and could make it to other platforms if Bungie feels up to the challenge.

Update: IGN reports that "Destiny" is described as a First-Person "shared world shooter" which sounds almost like an MMO because it will require an internet connection to play but will not be subscription based. "Destiny" will be coming out for Playstation 3 and it's successor but will not be coming out for the PC as Bungie refers to the game as a "console shooter". Xbox and Playstation players will not be able to play together and it's unclear if the current and next gen consoles will be able to play with one another.

So far there will be three playable classes: Titan (big guns), Hunter (sniper rifles/stealth), and Warlock (magic). There will be customization for your character in terms of weapons, armor, etc.

Last but not least "Destiny" will probably not come out in 2013 as Activision has said they do not expect anything from Bungie in 2013.
