After a brief two week end of summer hiatus, Seattle Music Insider is back and today we kick off our 2010 Bumbershoot coverage.

The three day musical event begins this Saturday, September 4th and runs through Monday, September 6th. Not only is this Saturday, the first day of the festival but also Mayor McGinn has officially proclaimed this day “Wheedle's Groove Day.”

Wheedle's Groove is a full length documentary film that combines interview footage, archival materials, original music and live performances to highlight the amazing legacy of the 1960’s and 1970’s funk, soul and R&B movement in the region.

The film received critical acclaim and received attention nationally, winning four awards at over a dozen film festivals.

“Wheedle’s Groove resists becoming a sentimental pastiche of bittersweet Old School reminisces by deftly illustrating how music shapes community, breaks barriers and forges new paths.” – John Hubbel, Indie Memphis Film Festival

“The filmmakers have approached the subject and its players with a sense of appreciation and compassion that is evident throughout the film. It is a must-see for any fan of soul, funk, and R&B music.” – Tim Sampson, Communications Director, Stax Museum of American Soul Music.

“A hugely entertaining chronicle of Seattle’s oft-overlooked history as a hotbed of soul music” -Todd Gilchrist / Cinematical

Seattle is well known for its’ rock scene, with artists like Jimi Hendrix, Heart, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and many more putting the city on the global music map. The funk and soul scene, as well the amazing sound that has come out of that scene seems to have been lost in the mix. The film shines the spotlight on the Seattle funk & soul movement as well as the talent artists that have comprised it.

Wheedle's Groove is a brilliant look into what was a lost piece of Seattle’s rich and diverse musical history. It it has to be heartwarming for the fans of this great American musical art form. Finally the group of artists that helped create a vibrant funk and r&b scene back in the day, in The Emerald City are finally getting the recognition and appreciation that has long been due to them.

Artists from Wheedle's Groove will perform at 3:45pm at the Fisher Green Stage to perform some of the music from the film. The band features guitarist Herman Brown, who we happened to meet at the Emerald Queen Taste of Tacoma and who we hope to interview for SMI Radio later this week. In addition we hope to have other member of the band on the show as well. Tickets for the three day event can be purchased at: http://bumbershoot.org/tickets/

We also will be covering the show and will have backstage interviews and photos of the band for our post Bumbershoot 2010 report.
