I woke up this morning, the window slightly ajar, to the sound of rain pouring outside. After the record-setting heat Seattle has had this summer, it came as a welcome sound…until I began rising from my sleep-state and became more and more aware of what day it was and what activities I had before me.
Today is the first day of Bumbershoot, and although the name comes from an umbrella, in all my years of coming to this festival, I cannot recall a single year when I would have needed one. I have never spent a day at Bumbershoot under rain clouds. So this year has already become special. Look at me, finding a silver-lining in things.
I arrived inside the Seattle Center grounds shortly after 1:00pm, and save for the fact I brought a light rain jacket (just in case) everything seems just like every other Bumbershoot I’ve been to. There is a cloud-cover, but so far no rain. The crowd seems of a normal size and most are walking around in t-shirts unconcerned for any possible inclement weather.
I’ll get a better idea of how big the crowd is when I make my way over to the Memorial Stadium mainstage where Katy Perry will begin her set at 1:45. The good news about Memorial Stadium is that many of the bleacher seats are covered should things turn for worse weather-wise.
