In necessary help at the point guard position, the Bulls are expected to sign D.J. Augustin.
Augustine, 26, was waived by the Toronto Raptors on Monday and won’t be able to sign with a team until he clears waivers at 5p.m. ET Wednesday and becomes a free agent. The Bulls will be on the road in New York at that time and pending a physical, the earliest Augustine would be available to play would be on Friday in Milwaukee.
Yahoo Sports first reported the Bulls interest in Augustine and CSNChicago confirmed that the move is all but certain.
The Bulls can opt to release veteran point guard Mike James, who’s still recovering from a sprained right MCL and has a non-guaranteed contract or send second-year guard Marquis Teague to the Iowa Energy – a move they made last week before having to recall him due to James’ injury.
Augustin -- was the ninth overall selection by the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2008 draft, same draft where Rose was selected first overall -- played in just 10 games with Toronto, before being released to make room for the incoming players in the trade between Toronto and Sacramento that sent Rudy Gay to the Kings. He has career averages of 9.4 points, 3.9 assists and a 36.4 percentage career 3-point shooter.
He spent last season with the Indiana Pacers backing up George Hill, before signing with the Raptors this summer as a free agent.
